'Congratulations to Mary-Teresa Moran on a terrific achievement, writes Jeremy Manuel Chairman of the Gauchers Association.
Congratulations also to every member of the Association who has been involved in our fund raising efforts.
Our first steps in raising money for research were hesitant as we were uncertain as to how much we could achieve and how long it would take. We need not have worried. Your magnificent efforts brought in the cash needed in less than half the time expected and enabled Ms Moran to carry out her valuable work.
So having shown what we are capable of, we must now set ourselves the challenge of doing even more. We are living in exciting times and it is easy to forget that it is less than eight years since enzyme replacement therapy was licensed in the United States.
Who knows what the next years may bring and let us commit ourselves to doing all that we can to help those fantastic doctors and scientists push back the boundaries of knowledge. As we move towards the Millennium, let us also continue our efforts for all those with Gauchers disease and in doing this, perhaps we can also help others who suffer from rare genetic inherited diseases. On behalf of the Executive of the Association, can I wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year.
